Challenge
Africa’s scientific talent is immense, but leadership capacity across research institutions often lags behind technical innovation. The African Science Leadership Programme (ASLP), supported by the University of Pretoria and the Global Young Academy, sought to change that by equipping emerging scientists not just with knowledge, but with the vision and capability to lead transformative change.
They needed a leadership programme that was anything but conventional.
Our Approach
Alchemy Inspiration was brought in by Inclusive Innovation to co-design and deliver a deeply experiential leadership journey. Using our Project Artistry methodology, we introduced a blend of systems thinking, reflective practice, art-based exploration, and cross-cultural dialogue.
We didn’t start with PowerPoints. We started with painting, drumming, storytelling, and personal insight. These tools opened space for deeper connection and courageous conversations, allowing scientists to discover their leadership identities in new, unexpected ways.
Sessions were designed to build trust, stretch minds, and connect research to real-world challenges across disciplines.
The Shift
Participants arrived expecting a formal academic workshop. They left with a renewed sense of purpose and expanded sense of self. Scientists who once stayed within disciplinary boundaries began thinking across systems, cultures, and communities.
The programme evolved from a single location at Future Africa into a continental movement. Alumni began launching satellite programmes in Uganda, Nigeria, Cameroon, and beyond—carrying the torch of transformational science leadership.
