Design Playbook (Tools & Practices)
Outsider Interviews: Invite voices from outside the system into the design process.
Diversity Mapping: Map who is in the room — and who is missing.
Stranger’s Eye Exercise: Ask a newcomer to observe a process and share what they see.
Cross-Cultural Dialogues: Bring together diverse perspectives for shared exploration.
Radical Inclusion Rules: Ensure even the most unconventional ideas get airtime.
Mindset (Reflection & Journaling)
How do I respond to people or ideas that feel unfamiliar?
Where am I unconsciously excluding “strangers” from my process?
What might I discover if I welcomed the unfamiliar more often?
Provocation:
“To be xenodochial is to remember that every stranger carries a piece of the future we cannot yet see.”
Facilitation Principle
As a facilitator, your role is to create hospitable spaces where everyone — especially newcomers or outsiders — feels safe to contribute. Model openness, protect difference, and highlight the value of perspectives that challenge the familiar.
Facilitator’s Mantra: “Every stranger is a source of wisdom waiting to be welcomed.”
Facilitation Toolkit (Methods & Activities)
Welcome Rituals: Begin sessions with warm, inclusive introductions.
Outsider-in-the-Room: Invite someone unfamiliar with the project to observe and reflect.
Rotating Roles: Assign participants to represent “stranger” perspectives.
Inclusion Check: Pause to ask, “Whose voice have we not yet heard?”
Cultural Exchange: Share practices or metaphors from diverse contexts to enrich dialogue.
