Empathy: Leading with compassion
Exchange Stage (Coaching & Mentoring)
Coaching: Coaches cultivate empathy by asking leaders to view situations from others’ perspectives. Questions like “What might they be experiencing right now?” build reflective awareness. Neuroscience shows that naming another’s emotions reduces defensiveness and fosters connection.
Mentoring: Mentors model empathy by sharing personal struggles and listening deeply to mentees. By saying “I’ve been there too”, mentors normalize challenges and offer guidance with compassion.
Together, coaching strengthens perspective-taking, while mentoring embodies compassion in relationships.
Gameplan (Tools & Practices)
Empathy Mapping → Visualize what others see, think, feel, and do in a given situation.
Active Listening Rituals → Paraphrase what others say before responding.
Emotion Naming → Encourage leaders to name emotions in conversations (“I sense you’re feeling…”) to reduce tension.
Role-Reversal Exercises → Have leaders argue from another’s perspective.
Closing Reflection
Empathy is the art of feeling with others — not to pity, but to empower. Leaders who neglect empathy create distance and distrust. Leaders who practice it build bridges of trust, resilience, and creativity.
Passing the baton on with empathy ensures the next runner receives not just a responsibility, but the reassurance that they are part of a bigger picture than their task and they are seen.
