The Alchemy key of Design Thinking

O

Originality

Originality

Design Playbook (Tools & Practices)

Creative Constraints: Limit time, resources, or materials to spark unusual solutions.

Analogy & Metaphor: Use comparisons to unrelated fields to generate fresh insights.

Role Reversal: Solve a problem as if you were a child, an elder, or even a competitor.

Mash-Ups: Combine two unrelated ideas (e.g., “banking + theatre”) to spark originality.

Crazy Rules: Introduce playful restrictions that force unconventional thinking.

Mindset (Reflection & Journaling)

When do I hold back original ideas out of fear of judgment?

What unique lens or experience do I bring that others cannot?

How might I honour my originality without needing to be perfect?

Provocation:

“Originality is not about being different for the sake of it. It is about daring to bring your unique contribution to the table.”

Facilitation Principle

As a facilitator, your role is to protect originality. Encourage unusual ideas, make space for play, and defend the voices that challenge the norm. Originality emerges when people feel safe enough to risk being different.

Facilitator’s Mantra: “Protect the spark that doesn’t fit the mould.”

Facilitation Toolkit (Methods & Activities)

Wild Idea Rounds: Ask explicitly for the most unusual idea in the room.

Creative Mash-Up Game: Randomly pair unrelated words or industries and design something new.

Silent Sketching: Let participants draw ideas before sharing to bypass conformity pressure.

Odd Object Provocations: Use strange artefacts or images as springboards for originality.
